Orthopaedics at Australind Vet – Repair of Comminuted Spiral Tibial Fracture In a Dog

Indi decided to put her foot on the automatic window control as her parents drove along the road. After she wound down the window, she just couldn’t help but leap out of a moving vehicle. This did not end well. Indi had a terrible fracture to her hind leg.

Radiographs confirmed a nasty fracture to her tibia but apart from pain and shock, she seemed to be OK.

There was some debate whether we should use an external fixation or a plate. In the end we decided it would take about 16 weeks for this to heal with an ESF and Indi was not the kind of dog that would tolerate this well.

We plated the tibia and what a great result!
